This is the book.

A parent comes in looking for a young adult book.

I recommend THE HUNGER GAMES.

"Think of your favorite book. This is... That Book... a month before you heard of it...."

"I'll think about it."

And they leave.

Or I say:

"I may be the first one to tell you about this, but I won't be the last."

"What's it about?"

"I can't tell you, because then you won't buy it..."

And they leave.

Or they say:

"I've never heard of it."

"Of course. That's why you asked. If you knew you wanted it, you'd be buying it."

Thing I always wonder -- for the 90% of the people who ignore my recommendation -- do they remember that someone told them about it? Or -- is it like a fresh discovery to them? And -- why did they ask? It's not like I was lukewarm in my recommendation....

Excellent book - I read it about three weeks ago and actually reread the second half just for the fun of it.

Unfortunately, I've heard the series degrades pretty rapidly. Can you confirm/deny?

I thought the third book was the weakest, but it was a logical conclusion to what went before.

I downloaded the first book in the series, not realizing it was a "young adult" novel. As an old adult I found it mildly entertaining, but not challenging or intellectually stimulating.

Bruce, check out Phillip Pullman's Golden Compass. Amazingly good YA, and intellectually stimulating. Unfortunately the final book doesn't hold up to the first.
