Downtown Comings and Goings. 3/3/12

Another changeover for another restaurant/bar.

Hola! is taking Tart's place, kitty corner to my store...

You know, when you start thinking about these high end restaurants on a street to street basis, I'm pretty sure that over half of them (just guessing, about 2/3rds of them) have changed hands in the last two & half years. Must be a brutal business.

In fact, forget "high-end" just think about eateries.

Might be easier to count the few that have survived.

Toomies, Deschutes Brewery, Bend Brewery, Pine Tavern, Sobo, High Tides, ....

I know there are others, just can't think of them.

There must be some return on the money that I'm not seeing, because the chances of success seem really poor.

These are mostly not mom and pops with a few thousands, or tens of thousands invested, they seem to be major investments, in the hundred thousands.

Who loans them the money? Is there some kind of finagling going on? (Not illegal finagling, just ways of making the money work or keep working?)

It's a mystery.

This list needs pruning. Maybe it should only go back to 2008.

"Toomies, Deschutes Brewery, Bend Brewery, Pine Tavern, Sobo, High Tides"

The quality of the Pine Tavern's food has really deteriorated, sadly. I'm wondering how long it will hold on.

"Who loans them the money? Is there some kind of finagling going on?"

No mystery. There are plenty of people with a few hundred thousand socked away. Living in Bend it might be hard to believe that, but it's true.

I'm glad you started and maintain this list, Duncan. It is nothing if not interesting...and extremely unwieldy.

But without the weather we got, we wouldn't have the forests, mountains, streams, and lakes we got, and without those, we wouldn't be a city at all.

What? Bend Mountain Coffee has been around for years. Good sandwiches.

O.K. Changed that back. Has Bend Mountain Coffee always been in that location?

"But without the weather we got, we wouldn't have the forests, mountains, streams, and lakes we got"

I don't see what the weather has to do with creating mountains. And while you do need a fair amount of moisture to produce streams, lakes and forests, winters that last eight months are not essential. Hawaii has plenty of streams and lush vegetation.
