I totally expected to like The Yiddish Policeman's Union, by Micheal Chabon. It seemed right up my alley.
I'm halfway through and stalled. Bored.
I admire the writing -- that isn't the same thing as saying I'm enjoying the story. I'm a genre reader, pure and simple. I want story above all, and the story needs to have hooks, suspense, intrigue. Otherwise, why bother?
I read for entertainment.
Probably just goes to show how shallow I am.

I really don't see how that's shallow. Seems pretty normal to me. A story should capture your attention. Reading a book you don't enjoy or care about the plot is something that should be left behind in school, I say.
