Downtown Comings and Goings.

I thought I'd go ahead and print the list again, though technically nothing has changed.

A couple of restaurants have come to fruition that were only in the winds. I've changed the 'Disco Bistro' entry to "Gatsby's" and updated.

I also wanted to mention that Boken has opened, which I listed way back in November.

Gotta say, Duncan, I wouldn't spend a dime in Gatsby's Blah Blah Blah, just based on its way too cutesy name alone.

Huh. Am I not spending enough time downtown? I have heard of maybe 10 or 15 of these businesses, on either list. Most of them, judging by the name alone, give me a total sense of 'who cares?'. For sure a few that are gone are missed, but most caused nary a ripple in The Force.

Duncan, sometime it would be fun to do a more formal Oldtimer's Quiz, of the kind that happens spontaneously amongst us oldtimers now and then. You know, someone says, 'hey, what was that business in the such-and-so building before XXXX?' One's level of Oldtimerness is determined by how far back the listing goes, with special credit for things like 'oh, that was the original Safeway building' or 'I remember when that was a school'. :)

Or, an easier version would be to take 10 random buildings downtown, say, and list all the businesses that have been in each one, back to original construction. Of course, it would be important to list some on Bond Street, since many of the ones at the north end originally held brothels upstairs (you can tell by the windows). :)-

My memory actually kinda sucks at this. Which is why I'm keeping the list.

Obvious ones -- J.C. Penney's, Wetles, Owl Drug, Brandeis Drug, Erickson's Stationary, Trailways Bus Depot, Pine Tavern -- oh, wait...

Arlie Seems's daughter handed in a paper to her teacher one time and referred to Mode-O-Day, explaining it was now Goody's. (Is it still Goody's?) Anyway, she got a poor grade on the paper because her teacher told her that Goodys had always been there (or at least since the 20's or something). She found an old pic, proved her point, and got the grade changed to an A.

Let's see: Mahoney's and Ray Leblanc, and for you newbies, Masterson St. Clair Hardware.

A couple off the top of my head: 900 Wall aka Merenda, former home of The Smart Shop, Bend's only 'high class' womens' clothing store before the Blue Teal. I bought a great winter coat there about 20 years ago.

Bend Mapping & Blueprints on Bond, formerly home to Sunnyside Sports, which moved there in maybe 1977, replacing Darryl's House of Music (which sold not only music, but also tvs, etc).

Tracking longtime businesses around town can be fun too. Blue Teal, opened waay south of town, then moved downtown decades later.

Sunnyside (about which I of course have the inside scoop) opened on NW Irving in an old garage in I think, 1973. (Cafe Rosemary was there briefly in the 2000s.) After a year or so it moved to Greenwood, then Bond (Darryls) then Wall St (when Bud Capell bought the former waterbed store and turnd it into a wee mall, around 1983), to its currrent location on Newport in 1990. And there it stays!

Your original store has at least stayed in one place!
