Downtown Comings and Goings. 6/28/11.

I asked the owner of Dream Pebbles if I could include her as a "new" business, even though she had already been open in the Penny's Galleria. I haven't kept track of the businesses inside the Galleria as much as I have the businesses that have street fronts. In some ways, this whole list is about street fronts.

But including Dream Pebbles only points out how long it's been since a truly new retail business has opened downtown -- since April.

What's been happening is -- established businesses are expanding or moving into more desirable and or larger locations. (Presumably leaving the smaller and less desirable locations, which presumably would be cheaper, for the new businesses.)

Thus, Lola's is expanding into the space that the Perspectives art gallery was at, and Dream Pebbles is moving into the Smith and Wade Salon space, and Bond St. market is moving into the River Bend space, and Cascade Cottons moved to Donner Flowers space and Wabi Sabi moved from Brooks to Wall.....and so on.

Big news today, Pita Pit is closed.

Well I think we can all agree that pita-pit had the smell of death from day one.
Interesting that 'new' money has finally stopped flowing.
A downtown hardware store could be coming soon :)
Something that people fucking need.
3 years into a 10+ year depression.
The future of downtown Bend is nickle and dime stores, or maybe $100 stores with hyperinflation.

A long time ago we all agreed that a 'move' is not a new biz in Bend.
Let's stick to the definition.
Maybe you should start a new list called 'turnover'.

YTD investment to CHF/USD would be 30%.
I just mention this to those who keep their head between their Bend arse. :0

Dunc, I'd love to get your take on Oregon Business magazine's story about Bend's "comeback": http://www.oregonbusiness.com/articles/101-july-2011/5460-bends-economy-is-coming-back-to-life

Mostly it's pulling together a lot of little bits of anecdotal evidence -- some new small businesses coming to Bend, some existing ones with modest plans to expand -- to try to make the case that Bend is starting to crawl out of the shitter.

I think if you're looking for "signs" of a comeback, it isn't a comeback.

A true comeback happens, and THEN you begin to notice, because by the time the comeback is here, everyone has pretty much given up looking.

I think we're still in the denial phase -- a long way from the end.

New businesses? Like I said, that really doesn't prove anything except that someone is willing to take a risk to open a business.

Happens when things are booming, happens when things are not booming.
In itself, it isn't proof of a resurgence.

In fact, I've noticed in past booms that there is such a overflow of energy left, that long after the big bang, there are still people feeling the energy.

Whether it's coming back or not, though -- it's best not to expect much of a boost to business -- I think it's prudent to contemplate an actual drop.

Anyway, that's the way I'm playing it.

Overall, I'd say we are getting lots of tourists, who aren't spending money. Is that a comeback?
