I'm confused.
Confused by why "struggling white voters" would support Romney, when he's advocating the same economic measures that got them "struggling" in the first place.
But that sinking feeling that white, middle aged white guys are being suckered is becoming the normal. When I talk to them, they seem thick as bricks.
What isn't normal is the way Democrats seem to have rallied around the idea of Bain-style capitalism.
This is probably the closest I've come to the idea of wishing there was a strong progressive third party.
I know it ain't going to happen. I know I'm going to vote for Obama, if for nothing else, for the sake of the Supreme Court nominations.
But never has it been so clear to me that almost all politicians, of either party, are bought and paid for by the large money.

My disenchantment with Obama is that he hasn't been liberal enough.
I think he's an "establishment" guy, in the parlance of my 60's youth.
In his defense, I don't think he ever pretended to be anything else. Nor could he have been elected as anything else. His slogans of "Change" were slogans, but really he came in to save the "system."
I still greatly admire him. I suspect, in fact, that he can't govern any other way.
But I do wish he'd gone after Wall Street more. He's saying all the right things now, but I think he will still be shoring up the Wall Street system when he gets re-elected.
But at least he won't be handing over the rest of the country to them, like I think Romney would.
In the end, it does come down to the social issues, and the paramount importance of the Supreme Court.

In every privacy issue for 20+ years before the Supreme's they have gone with the COPS, ... 100% of the time.
Why not in the 1950's the Supreme Court ruled that the ONLY purpose of COP's is to protect the 'court', the purpose of COP's is not to protect citizens.

Reagan knew exactly what he was doing when, as one of his first presidential acts, he rescinded the Fairness Doctrine. If the doctrine had remained in place Limbaugh and Faux Noise could not exist. Without it, radio and TV networks are free to broadcast political propaganda 24/7.
Obama could reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, but the right-wing majority on the Supreme Court probably would strike it down in a matter of weeks.
Oh, the implication wasn't that they were stupid, but as you said -- they can't be reached through the layers of propaganda they've been listening to.

The funny thing about this "brain-washing" charged is that it is the most verifiable of phenomenon. They one I can see at work.
I've known people for years, friends, who suddenly became weirdo rightwing fanatics.
So they start going in that direction and I say to them, "Hey, obviously, we aren't going to agree on politics, so let's stay friends and not talk about it."
And they refuse. They insist on attacking me every chance they get. Or they refuse to talk to me anymore about anything -- the weather, sports...
Listening to Lars or Rush or Fox has made them really intolerant.
I think politics is too complicated to lose friendships over, they don't. (Much less, be willing to talk in a rational calm manner about those things we disagree about.)
It's because I don't think you can change people's minds about politics that I don't usually stray in that territory with this blog.

The problem is the right-wing and been pushed into corner with divorce law, DUI, and political-correctness, and NOW they're pushing back, and the LEFT which has the power and courts, simply is pushing back. It's going to be UGLY, but its the economics that will start the civil-war, but its this left-right hate bullshit that will shed the blood.
When a person attaches their identity to their ideology, any disagreement feels like a personal attack.
Using the term "cult" is not out of line; it resembles that behavior, where those "outside" are perceived as an existential threat. It's very powerful and very dangerous. Sooner or later, given the power to do it, those who feel threatened will act to eliminate the threat.
This phenomenon is not confined to the right. I saw the same behavior from the left when I was a student at U.C. Santa Cruz. Any True Believer of any stripe will behave similarly.
Suggesting that "we stay friends and not talk about it" can't work, because you are still rejecting their identity, which must be constantly validated (hence the continued doses of propaganda).
Duncan, you have political opinions and some core beliefs, but you don't tie your whole sense of self to them. It's a whole nuther thing — and it's scary...
